A sort of NOTICE OF RACE
GOOSE ISLAND REGATTA 2019
Notice is hereby given of the 2019 Goose Island Regatta to be sailed under the burgee of the Lough Derg Yacht Club, July 6th-7th.This will be a sociable event involving Geese and Islands, being organised by the crews of S142 and S144. The 167 crew are on sabbatical and send their apologies; we hope SOD 167 will be taking part of course
Rules: the Racing Rules of Sailing shall apply, including prescriptions of the IS, SODA, and the organisers – we’ll make them up as we go. Jet skis, electric engines and drones are banned.
Registration: will take place from 21:14 hrs in the bar of the clubhouse on Friday 5th June, and will remain open until closing time. Entries are invited well in advance; this will be a huge help to the organisers … please please please.
Briefing: will take place upstairs in the Club at 09:39 hrs Saturday, a little later than last year. Timing may be out a few minutes; the goose caller will sound to alert you
Racing: will start each day from Goose Island and take the fleet up the lake or away west (weather dependant). Subsequent races will start from Barbarossa in and around the islands, with the final race finishing back at Goose. There will be 2 races each day to count for the overall event, with alternative ‘events’ during the day – bring your bathers, and be sure SOD’s have proper oars, oar locks or thole pins
Sustenance: since the fleet are ‘off-shore’ for each day picnics are advisable, unless a food drop / delivery can be arranged. House boats, yachts, RIBs, and all manner of cruisers are encouraged to join the fleet each day; there will be plenty of room to take lunches and spare gear.
Courses: will be drawn on a course board and displayed on Barbarossa; marks will include club marks, navigation marks, islands, rocks, reefs, rushes and shoals.
First gun Saturday will sound after Solpadiene and before the clock chimes 1101hrs. Sunday’s start time might be announced at the Regatta Dinner
Regatta Dinner: a BBQ is planned for the Saturday night, an integral part of the Regatta. The evening will feature charcoal, modern art, recitals from ‘Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes’, a piano, and a box of shreddies. We have to know numbers in advance, so if you’re taking part it’s essential you let us know at least the week before (Frank shouldn’t need to phone around)
Eligibility: this event suits fully grown immature adults; we welcome entries from Lough Ree and expect to see all the Derg boats out on the water. We also expect the Squib Class will join in for each of the two days. Its essential that we sail 3-up in SOD’s, opportunity to invite new sailors into your boat if you’re short of crew; there will be prizes for goslings – this is the ideal weekend to invite young sailors; please don’t rely on organisers to find your crew.
Prize giving: will take place back at the club house, an event highlight if we get around to organising prizes. We’ll aim for 17:30 hrs Sunday – we won’t rush home if the sun is shining. Scoring, discards and other minor details will be discretionary.
SI’s (Social Instructions) will follow when the excitement of this initial announcement has calmed down
